Fox Hunting in Virginia
In the fortuitous way that life’s significant events seem to occur, so were we drawn to fox hunting in Virginia. A brief encounter with a British philosopher lecturing at the Heritage Foundation led us to research his impressive list of published works. Among them we found a slender volume entitled “On Hunting.” His name is Roger Scruton and we heartily recommend the book. His description of the English countryside, the tradition of the hunt and how he came to be involved was by turns poignant, profound and hilarious.
We knew that George Washington had been an avid huntsman but didn’t realize that fox hunting was still practised in Virginia. A few clicks on the Internet quickly revolutionized our consciousness and put us in touch with the Bull Run Hunt, a local institution since 1911.
In the photo-essays which follow, we hope to convey some of what makes this sport so delightful, even from our presently non-equestrian perspective.
