We were inspired to begin this project when, after moving to Washington DC, we realized that America is much more than politics or electoral parties. America is a collection of ideas that promote human liberty and that those ideas are a relatively new concept in civilization. Of course, we were aware of these concepts before, but had an epiphany that reminded us that we had been taking this liberty for granted. We realized that the preservation and advancement of freedom depends upon the constructive engagement of as many citizens as possible. Our small contribution to the maintenance of our own liberty and perhaps even to creating a freer world will be this book. The foundation of this nation was called the “American experiment.” Because we believe it is an on-going process, the working title of the book is “America, The Great Experiment.”
Our intention for the book is two-fold:
- To inform, or perhaps just remind, the average American reader that, although “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” may be unalienable rights, the freedom to enjoy them was born of struggle, and to continue to enjoy them implies a responsibility to maintain our freedom.
- To inspire average American readers to become more engaged in the Experiment that was created for them. To remind them that real engagement means more than just voting.
We plan to accomplish these aims through the voices of members of government and opinion leaders selected for our interviews. The book will be a collection of different responses to the same basic questions.
